Utah Concealed Firearms Permit Course
|

I am sometimes asked why my concealed firearm permit course takes 8 hours
when others are much shorter. Here's why:
The state requires certain things be taught. Unlike some states, Utah does not set a minimum number of hours of training -- only that certain material be covered. So, there is no need for me or any other instructor to add filler to simply take up time. Based on the state's standards, each instructor writes his/her own syllabus, then submits it to the state for approval. Once approved, each instructor must adhere to his/her approved syllabus.

I've attended some of the shorter courses and I am satisfied that those instructors technically cover the minimums the state requires. But, using lethal force for self-protection is a serious game and I find that I cannot teach everything that my students need and deserve in less than 6-7 hours and give the material adequate depth. In fact, graduates of the 2- to 4-hour courses sometimes come to me for more training because they are dissatisfied with depth of those shorter courses. In addition, except for students with military or police training or comparable formal training, I take all my students to the shooting range for live-fire training -- something that's not required by the state and something many instructors don't do. This is also an opportunity for you to shoot any or all of my handguns to help you decide what to buy for yourself. Including live-fire training brings my course up to about 8 hours. Graduates of this course will
also satisfy the training requirements for the 8-hour
NRA Personal Protection in the Home Course.
All this, and I still charge about the same as the other guys!

| NRA Home Firearm Safety
|
Learn the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms in the home. An emphasis on cleaning and maintenance of firearms will also be conducted, including information on:

- The fundamental rules of safe gun handling
- How to identify and unload different types of firearms
- The different types and uses of ammunition
- Factors for evaluating gun storage options
- How to clean and care for guns

Utah Hunter Education Course
|
This course is mandatory for all Utah hunters born after December 31, 1965. It includes instruction on firearm safety, hunter responsibility, wildlife management, survival, wildlife identification, and more. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a free 365-day basic hunting license. The license will allow a Hunter Education graduate to hunt small game. This license is also required to qualify for big game permits.

Utah Bowhunter Education Course
|
This is a comprehensive course for national bowhunter certification. While not currently required in Utah, completion of this course is recommended for new bowhunters and is required to hunt in Idaho, Montana, Alaska and several other states. This course does not replace the Hunter Education course listed above. Archery hunters born after December 31, 1965 still need to take that course. Note: This course does not substitute for the extended archery orientation course required for some Utah archery hunts.

Boy Scout Shooting Merit Badges
|
I am a registered merit badge counselor for the shooting merit badges. I will work with Troops or with individual Scouts as needed. Course duration varies with the needs of the Scout(s) but plan on times similar to those listed above for comparable NRA courses.
